The useful version of a template is circle-safe, not a download
A handful of sites sell a blank PSD or Figma file sized to 512×512 and call it a template. The part actually worth having is seeing the circular crop before you export — the canvas size alone doesn't tell you that.
A 512×512 square with nothing marked on it is one Google search away from any image editor's new-file dialog. What isn't obvious without seeing it is how much of that square the circular crop keeps— roughly the middle 79% by area, with the four corners always clipped regardless of what's drawn in them.
What actually goes wrong
The pixel count is the easy part. The crop and the mix-up with the banner account for almost everything else.
- Export at 512×512, not whatever size your logo file happened to be
- Center the mark inside an imagined circle, not just the square canvas
- Check it at small size — your server list is smaller than most previews
- Put text or fine detail near the corners — the circular crop removes it
- Assume you need to boost the server first — a static icon needs nothing
- Confuse this with the server banner — different shape, different place, different requirement
